The Hvolsskóli Elementary School in Hvolsvöllur serves the district encompassing the area from the River Jökulsá in the east to the River Eystri-Rangá in the west.
Hvolsskóli functions as a primary educational institution, catering to students aged 6 to 16, and is organized across 10 grade levels.
The school is structured into three educational phases: the initial phase covering grades 1 to 4; the intermediate phase spanning grades 5 to 7; and the advanced phase comprising grades 8 to 10.
The student body consists of approximately 230 students.
Hvolsskóli operates in alignment with the developmental framework of "Education for Responsibility." Our commitment is to ensure that each individual understands their role, that their needs are addressed, and that due consideration is given to them while maintaining clearly defined boundaries. The school employs the ART (Aggression Replacement Training) methodology across all educational levels, offering support in moral development, anger management, and the cultivation of social skills. Further details can be found at www.isart.is and in Hvolsskóli's comprehensive school curriculum accessible on the school's official website.
As a testament to our dedication to environmental sustainability, Hvolsskóli proudly holds the designation of a Green Flag school and is recognized as a UNESCO-Geo school. The institution actively participates in waste segregation and champions various environmental initiatives. The Environmental Committee, inclusive of both school staff and a designated student representative from each class, plays a pivotal role in this regard. Recently, Hvolsskóli has joined the Katla Geopark, attaining the prestigious status of a UNESCO-Geo school. We eagerly anticipate engaging in exciting endeavors within this framework.
Continuity between school and after school activities
At the conclusion of the school day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, a diverse array of extracurricular activities are seamlessly integrated into the schedule. Details regarding these ongoing activities are disseminated during the fall, providing children and their parents with an opportunity to collectively select a focus for the winter term. It is important to note that the chosen activity is considered binding for the entirety of the academic year.
After-school programs / Skólaskjól
The After-school program caters to students in grades 1 through 4, operating from the commencement to the conclusion of the school day. It assumes responsibility for students immediately after school hours every day, remaining accessible until 16:15 from Monday to Thursday and until 16:00 on Fridays.
